UPDATE: Open letter on community networks
Dear all, // WARNING: This is email is sent to the contact addresses of 60+ signatories in Bcc. The next email, probably early next week, will be sent through a mailing list to follow up on this joint effort. Of course, you'll be able to unsubscribe from the mailing list at any moment. But *if you already don't want to be subscribed to the mailing list and opt-out, or suggest another address instead, please send an email by Friday 17th* to advocacy@netcommons.eu . // First of all, we are very grateful for the keen interest you expressed regarding the open letter on sustaining community networks (https://lqdn.co-ment.com/text/Rl42W44XAc6/view/). To our knowledge, this is one of the very first initiative to gather input from such a diverse group, and we hope that other collective efforts will follow. Here is an update on publishing and disseminating the letter: * The letter is under embargo until 11AM CET on Thursday (tomorrow). It will be sent by La Quadrature du Net to EU institutions (EU Commission, EU Council and EU Parliament) on Thursday. * From 11AM on Thursday, all signatories are invited to publish the letter on their websites (and send them to the press contacts). The original English version with the most up-to-date list of signatories is here: https://lqdn.co-ment.com/text/Rl42W44XAc6/view/ (you can embed the document directly on your website to keep it up to date with incoming signatures). The text of the open letter is also currently being translated in different languages. - Final translations in Italian, Portuguese, Greek, French are available on this wiki: https://wiki.laquadrature.net/Paquet_Telecom_2017/lettre_NetCommons - All the other ones are still being worked on and will be put on the wiki if/when done: Spanish: http://etherpad.guifi.net/p/netcommons-letter German: http://etherpad.netcommons.eu/p/openletter_DE Dutch: http://etherpad.netcommons.eu/p/openletter_NL * To introduce the open letter, a joint press release has been drafted and is available at this address http://etherpad.netcommons.eu/p/openletter_press_release (translations are being written at the very end of the pad, should you want to use them). Of course, you're welcome to use this or to write your own header to disseminate the letter. * For press contacts, you may want to handle them yourself and explain to interested media why you think this initiative is important to you or, if not, you can relay media inquiries to advocacy@netcommons.eu. As for next steps: * La Quadrature du Net will coordinate efforts to write amendments to the Telecoms Package that reflect the various recommendations contained in the open letter. You should hear about that by the end of the month. * Our research project, netCommons, is also starting to organize a policy workshop to be held in Brussels later this year. We'll keep you posted when we know more. * In the meantime, this collective effort is a great opportunity to open the discussion about the EU CNs representation, which could take place on the soon-to-be created mailing list and in various related upcoming events, like the battle of the mesh in Vienna June 5-11, http://battlemesh.org/, and the workshop on DIY and community networking in Stockholm, June 12, http://diynetworking.net/ifipnetworking2017/ In any case, we will try to come up with concrete proposals in the coming weeks and months and welcome your feedback and suggestions. Don't hesitate to write back to us with any question or proposition you may have. Thanks again for your help and support! Félix
